In modern conditions company should have flexible management and corporate culture, based on effective leadership and innovative decisions.

Round Table Improvement of the System of Corporate Management with the Help of Effective Motivation of Top Managers
24 November 2009

The meeting was held at the conference hall of RFC Business School. Olena Volska, Director of EBS Company, defined long-term programs of TOP managers motivation while building the system of corporate management and practical aspects of their implementation in Ukraine.

Participation in capital can be suggested in the capacity of real or phantom stock options. It allows owners of companies to hold necessary employees, cooperate with them on equal partnership and give them the right to partial ownership of the company.

Ms Volska thinks that there are essential barriers for implementing motivation programs for TOP managers based on ownership options in Ukraine. Among them are: underdevelopment of the stock market, lack of companies whose shares are traded, low market liquidity and incomplete legislation. To improve the situation company owners should apply international experience.
Mr Bahan defined two categories of employees in modern companies: those who execute operational functions and those who have an influence on final results of the company’s activity through their strategic decisions. He is sure that the main task of successful manager is to learn how to combine functions of effective executor and strategist at the same time.

To improve business processes Ms Blinova recommended to pay attention to the ammount and sources of external information, to maintain the balance between holding talented workers and reducing of costs, to attract new personnel and decrease the risk with combining efforts.

Using programs of motivation of TOP managers such as participation in profit (bonus programmes) and participation in capital is widespread in the world practice.

Conference: Crewing in Ukraine: prospects and possibilities – with EBA informational support
20 November 2009

Ukrainian crewing companies felt those changes that happened on the world’s market. Problems in banking sector and increase of prices on fuel have considerably complicated the work of maritime transportation system. In general the flow of cargo sea transport decreased and therefore redused the demand on sea staff. Thus a problem of free skilled staff is still vital in Ukraine. It became the main idea of the Conference «Crewing in Ukraine: prospects and possibilities», which took place in Odessa with the EBA informational support.

Natalia Illina, the head of employment and demography policy department of the Main Department of Labor and Social Policy of Odesa Regional Administration, marked, that 53 thousands of Ukrainian citizens were employed abroad in 2008 in Odesa Region, it is 7% more than in 2007. The basic problems of labor migration, according to Mrs. Illina, today are reduction of working places and falling prices on labor, unsolved issues concerning labor migrants taxation and migrant worker’s pension. Among topical questions which can be decided at regional level, Mrs. Illina sees the following: licensing of employment brokers (crewing agencies); employment of Ukrainian citizens abroad using official channels; strengthen control of law enforcement authorities for detecting shadow mediators; providing high-quality professional training by bringing foreign investments.

During the Conference participants explored the situation on Ukrainian and World crewing markets, shared their experience and ideas, obtained important and interesting information from the representatives of Ukrainian and International crewing agencies and experts.

Odesa City Employment Center Director Svitlana Lipovska dwelled upon today’s situation on the labor market of Odesa. The amount of registered unemployed people increased 3 times for the last year, about 10 thousand people applied to Odesa City Employment Center. As for qualification of the unemployed, more than 80% of them are white-collar workers (office staff): accountants, managers, engineers, architects, economists.

In the work of the Conference the issues about labor migration, development of management competence among sea staff, legal regulation of mediation in seaman employment, claims of crew members and judicial practice in Ukraine and the future of crewing in Ukraine were discussed.

Presentation: Executive search of TOP managers
12 November 2009

The meeting was held at the conference hall of Oblasna Rada. The representatives of EBS Consulting company presented basic steps of TOP managers’ search. The main steps are:

  - to define demands to the candidates
  - to define companies where the potential candidates work
  - to make a list of candidates with the contact information
  - to contact with the candidate (first phone talk)
  - interview and knowledge assessment
  - to adjust work conditions

The speakers drew attention to the following: it is necessary to remember that work experience and principles of life of the candidates should coincide with goals of the company. During the first interview with the candidate important things are to introduce yourself and the name of the company, to tell short information about the vacancy and to make an appointment (preferably at your office).

The speakers also pointed out the list of issues which should be discussed only with the director but not with the HR manager, they are: salary and work conditions of the candidate. At the end of the presentation participants had an opportunity to share their own experience and ask questions.

The main mistakes at the first contact which should be avoided are: to insist on the meeting if a candidate refuses to meet; to interview the candidate by the phone.
