New
EBA President
| |

Examining the voting results, the EBA Board held a special
meeting to appoint Trond Moe of Telenor the
EBA new President on 23 June 2008. Andrea Raffaseder
of Siemens Ukraine was Moe’s predecessor holding the post till 23
June 2008. |
|
Commenting on his new appointment Trond Moe said:
”I’m honoured and happy to take over the President position in
such an impressive organisation as the EBA. I’ve had the privilege
to serve on the Board for almost 1.5 years and would like to thank
my fellow Board members for their trust in me. I also look forward
to working close with the EBA excellent staff and administration.
The EBA has a vision which I truly believe in, and since it probably
will not be achieved easily or very soon, it definitely leads and
unites all our members. The vision is to enable and drive the establishment
of European business practices and values in Ukraine. We can do this
by reducing the barriers to investment that still exist in Ukraine,
by closer European integration and last, but not least, by promoting
Ukraine in our home countries as a fantastic place with wonderful
people and tremendous opportunities.”
The EBA executive Director Anna Derevyanko noted: “The decision
of the Board members first of all showed that the colleagues highly
and justly appreciated the outstanding achievements Trond Moe had
reached within 9 months as the EBA Vice-President. Prior to that,
he proved to be a very enthusiastic and loyal Board member and a valuable
asset to the whole team. As Vice-President he invariably exhibited
his genuine concern over tasks challenging the EBA members and constantly
demonstrated his thorough devotion and strong commitment to the EBA
mission. We are pleased to congratulate Mr Moe on his new important
Post. No doubt his wide experience, deep insight and highly professional
skills will significantly contribute to the EBA development and expansion." |

EBA EuroDrink Party Norwegian
Night
|
|
| |
Maintaining and cherishing a good old tradition, the
EBA combined the efforts with a number of its important partners to
arrange another EuroDrink Party at the Royal Norwegian Embassy
in Kyiv on Tuesday, 24 June 2008.
Though a vacation season has officially started, it did not put off
people turning up at the EuroDrink Party to enjoy each other’s company
in a relaxed atmosphere and socialise within the EBA community.
Two hostesses at the entrance enthusiastically welcomed the newly
arrived guests to the territory of Norway by encouraging them to metaphorically
“cross the Arctic Circle”.
Finely chiselled and very impressive ice-bars served to convey a deeper
impression of the country of legendary Vikings.
The EBA Executive Director Anna Derevyanko opened the ceremony and
gave the floor to Ambassador of Norway Olav Berstad who warmly greeted
the guests and invited them to taste the flavour of the mysterious
northern land. |
|
Then he officially informed all the guests that Trond
Moe of Telenor had been elected the EBA new President. The whole party
warmly congratulated Trond Moe upon his new appointment.
Traditionally, the EuroDrink highlighted the EBA business lottery
awarding winners with a range of special prizes - one certificate
for accommodation at Buymerovka Pine & SPA Resort and one UIA
flight ticket to any place of destination.
Furthermore, the EBA arranged an instant lottery offering 3 certificates
for a beer-trying excursion to the BBH plant and 10 books of Frishberg
& Partners.
The Norwegian musical band donning traditional costumes and performing
traditional songs added to a special atmosphere of the party.
To top it off, the EBA members, the Norwegian Embassy staff and the
guests savoured beer of Baltic Beverages Holding Ukraine and delicious
ice cream of Dolce Italia.

OLGA SYDORENKO
Committee Coordinator
HER MOTTO: Don’t be content with what you
have already achieved – move on! |
|
| |
1
September can symbolically signify the very beginning of a new year
- a vacation season is officially over, schoolchildren have to flock
to their schools again and students resume their studies at Universities.
Business life starts afresh and gets things moving on.
Exactly at that time 2 years ago Olga Sydorenko, a young and
prospective graduate of the Ukrainian Academy of Foreign Trade, appeared
to be standing in the EBA doorway ready to set out on a journey to
breath-taking career prospects.
To get even more experience Olga started working as an intern and
obtained a position of Event Manager. Yet nothing was enough for her.
Being a hard-worker, Olga was tirelessly eager to learn and make constant
progress. No sooner had she received her diploma in International
Law that she chose to earn a postgraduate degree in International
Maritime Law.
Therefore it did not take long before Olga got promoted to Committee
Coordinator running 2 working groups and 4-5 different Committees,
which numbered up to 100 people. Her chief responsibilities covered
arranging various events and round tables and attending Public Councils.
Olga could easily serve as an indispensable and strong link in the
communication chain embracing all the EBA Committee members.
Recalling her childhood dreams, Olga says she wanted to be everything
– an actress, a singer, a writer. Yes, a writer, above all. This dream
is to be fulfilled, Olga confesses – she still cherishes the idea
of writing a book comprising philosophical essays on the eternal problem
of the humankind - “What Makes People |
|
Happy”. Well, we cannot wait to read this indisputable
masterpiece. And she really knows how to be happy and wants to share
her knowledge with all of us.
Besides high school, Olga finished a musical school where she was
taught to play piano professionally. Now and then she will take individual
lessons with a tutor to play an electronic piano at home. Beethoven
is Olga’s favourite composer.
She prefers reading psychological novels and recently Carlos Castaneda
has taken her fancy.
Following the best traditions of her generation going in for winter
sports, Olga is immensely enthusiastic about snowboarding. Basically
she travels to Poland or the Carpathian mountains to enjoy snow-capped
peaks and fantastic slopes in a lovely company of her friends. Yet
she dreams about trying the highest peaks in Switzerland.
Though born in Donetsk, Olga settled down in Kyiv a long time ago
and made the city her home. Anyway she has very much in common with
Kyiv. According to the latest discoveries of astrologists, Ukraine’s
capital is considered the city of lions whereas Leo is Olga’s Zodiac
sign.
Furthermore, due to her good-humoured nature, she feels at home everywhere.
She is no stranger in any city she visits, be it Paris, Prague or
London. The USA and India are the next on her travel agenda.
She prefers wearing GREEN COLOURS, she enjoys drinking GREEN TEA and
she loves eating SWEETS.
“Mobilus in mobile” – this Latin set phrase describes Olga best.
Read in the next issue about Kateryna Glushanytsya, Committee
Assistant. |

Visit of EU journalists to Ukraine:
EU projects present their activities
A briefing for a group of journalists from the EU Member States was
held on 20 June in the premises of the International NGO “Internews-Ukraine”
in Kyiv.
The briefing was aimed to raise awareness of EU journalists of concrete
EU projects implemented in Ukraine in the frameworks of the European
Neighbourhood Policy, with special emphasis on the fields of environment
and public health. The event was held in the framework of a three-day
visit of journalist delegation to Kyiv, co-organized by the European
Commission, the European Journalism Centre and Internews-Ukraine.
The briefing was opened by project manager of the Delegation of the
European Commission to Ukraine Matthew Green who made an overview
of EU co-operation with Ukraine in the framework of the TACIS programme
and the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI).
Ukraine benefited from EU assistance worth EUR 2.4 billion pledged
in the framework of the TACIS programme between 1991 and |
|
2006. The European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument
which replaced TACIS on 1 January 2007, increases the amount of EU
aid earmarked for Ukraine and makes it more flexible and efficient.
In contrast to the TACIS programme focused on project-oriented assistance
(overall, about 300 EU projects have been implemented or are currently
under implementation in Ukraine), the ENPI concentrates more upon
direct budget support to Ukraine with the aim to achieve priority
objectives of EU-Ukraine cooperation.
Finally, the Team Leader of EU project Support to Secondary Health
Care Reform Dr Greta Ross touched upon activities and key priorities
of this initiative implemented in Ukraine’s three pilot oblasts: Zhytomyr,
Poltava and Kharkiv. As she says, the overall objective of the initiative
is to support Ministry of Health and the Government of Ukraine in
establishing an effective, cost-efficient and equitable health care
system in Ukraine.
After the presentation by the EU projects journalists had an opportunity
to ask questions on implementation of these EU initiatives. |
