German School opens in Kyiv on 1 September
2008
At long last a German School will open its doors in Kyiv on 1 September!
Located in the centre of Kyiv, the school's programme will follow
the concept of "encounter" or "Begegnung" - giving
German students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the
Ukrainian language and culture by studying with Ukrainian and students
from other nations, who are interested in the German language and
culture. The school will start at elementary level with two classes
for Years 1 to 4 (from age 6 to 10). Years 1 and 2 and Years 3 and
4 will be taught together initially. Subjects |
|
will mostly be taught by native German teachers, with
teachers from Ukraine for the Ukrainian part of the curriculum. In
years to come the school will gradually expand into secondary level.
The opening of the German School in Kyiv is based on an initiative
of committed parents, who founded a school association in the autumn
of 2007. The German and Austrian Embassies support this project.
Parents who wish to enrol their children at the German-Ukrainian "Begegnungsschule"
are invited to send in their applications a.s.a.p. Further information
and application forms can be found on www.deutscheschule.kiev.ua |

Slovakia can join the euro area
in 2009
The European Commission concluded that Slovakia meets the criteria
for adopting the euro and made a proposal to the Council to this effect.
The regular Convergence Report on euro readiness, adopted by the Commission,
shows that the other nine countries with a so-called 'derogation'
have made progress on the road to the single currency, but do not
yet meet all the conditions for euro adoption.
The Council of EU finance ministers (ECOFIN) will take the final decision
on the adoption of the euro in Slovakia in July, after Parliament
has given its opinion and EU heads of state and government have discussed
the subject at their summit meeting in June. |
|
“Slovakia has achieved a high degree of sustainable
economic convergence and is ready to adopt the euro on 1 January 2009.
However, to ensure that the adoption of the euro is a success, Slovakia
must pursue its efforts to maintain a low-inflation environment, be
more ambitious with regard to budgetary consolidation and strengthen
its competitiveness position," said Joaquin Almunia, EU Commissioner
for Economic and Monetary Affairs.
The so-called “convergence criteria” which an EU member state needs
to fulfill in order to join the euro area consist of four stability-oriented
economic conditions regarding the government budgetary position, price
stability, exchange rate stability and convergence of long-term interest
rates. The national legislation on monetary affairs must also be in
line with the EU Treaty >>> read

First quarter 2008: Continued growth and stable
margin
In the first quarter of 2008, Telenor’s pro forma revenues (including
Kyivstar) increased by four per cent compared to the first quarter
of 2007, reaching NOK 26.3 billion. Underlying revenues increased
by seven per cent in the same period. The EBITDA margin before other
income and expenses was 35.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2008,
up from 34.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2007. Telenor’s operations
added more than four million subscriptions during the first quarter.
"In the first quarter of 2008 we saw continued underlying revenue
growth combined with a stable EBITDA margin. The appreciation of the
Norwegian Krone puts pressure on our reported revenue growth. The
number of subscriptions in our mobile operations reached 147 million,
mainly contributed by continued high net additions in Pakistan, Bangladesh
and Thailand," said President and CEO of Telenor, Jon Fredrik
Baksaas. Read

Every 30-years-old person has to care about
own pension in advance
Every 30-years-old person has to care about own pension in advance,
as no country is able to provide full support for its own citizens
in their aging, said Vitaliy Melnychuk, KINTO Vice-president for the
live-talk program "Balance" on "Radio Era FM"
on April 22. The program was devoted to the problems in the sphere
of Ukraine citizens' social security and pension reform. Mr. Melnychuk
talked about opportunities offered by non-government pension funds
and advised on how to improve one's own financial well-being in existing
realities. The open non-government pension fund "Social Standard"
managed by asset management company KINTO gives everyone opportunity
to take advantage of non-government pension provision. The funds of
future pensioners are effectively invested in Ukraine's economy. The
